How Much Time Local SEO Actually Takes Each Month
Most owners asking about local SEO are really asking one thing: how much of my week does this eat. The honest answer is smaller than people expect, and the hours only pay off if they land in the right places.
There is a question underneath almost every conversation about local SEO, and it usually does not get asked out loud. Not how much it costs, and not how long it takes to work. How much of my week is this going to eat.
It is a fair thing to want to know before starting. A roofer in August does not have an afternoon to give away on a promise.
The honest number is small, and that is the problem
The work that moves a Louisville trade up the local results is not complicated and it does not take many hours. It takes the same few hours, repeatedly, for long enough that Google notices the pattern. That is the part people underestimate, and it is why so much of this gets abandoned in month two.
Somebody who set aside half a day a month and actually spent it would be ahead of most of their competitors inside a year. Somebody who spent three full days in January and nothing after would not be.
A useful version of this budget is laid out in how to rank number one in your city with four hours of work a month, which splits four hours across reviews, the Business Profile, and one new page, and puts survey numbers behind why the split falls that way.
Where the hours go
The rough shape, if you are doing it yourself:
Reviews, about an hour. Asking the customers you finished for, and replying to what comes back. Recency matters more than total, so this one is genuinely monthly rather than something you catch up on.
Your Google Business Profile, about an hour. Categories, the service list, photos from real jobs, hours that are actually right. Most of this is a one-time cleanup, then it becomes maintenance.
One page, about two hours. A single page aimed at one town you want calls from, or one service you want more of. One a month compounds; ten in a weekend does not.
What does not deserve the time
The hours get wasted in predictable places. Rewriting the homepage again. Chasing directory listings past the handful that matter. Reading about schema markup. None of that is what is keeping a Louisville contractor out of the map pack, and it is where a whole month's budget usually goes.
If you want to know what is actually holding you back rather than guessing, the fastest way to find out is to read your own Search Console data, which we cover in how to read your Google Search Console.
When four hours is not enough
This budget assumes a business that is basically set up. A profile that has been suspended, a site with no service pages at all, or a brand new listing with no reviews is a bigger job before the monthly rhythm starts to make sense.
It also assumes you actually have the four hours. Most owners we talk to would rather hand it over than find them, which is the honest reason this ends up outsourced.
